Acne Scars Don’t Have To Be Permanent. Find Out About The Best Acne Scar Treatment For You

If you’re suffering from acne, or ever had the condition when you were younger, then you would know that having to deal with scarring is often one of the unfortunate side effects of the condition.

Luckily, there are treatment options available if you feel that you want to deal with your acne scarring.

Acne Scars

Generally, there are three types of scarring caused by acne:

  • Box car scars, which have sharp angles and edges, and can be shallow or deep in your skin.
  • Ice Pick scars are scars that are deep, but have small pits.
  • Rolling scars are wide and deep scars that seem to flow over the skin, which is caused by damage under the surface of your skin.

Treatments

We find that often more than one treatment type is needed to clear up acne scars, seeing as everybody’s skin is unique, and scars will present differently for each person.

The range of scar treatments are:

  • Skin resurfacing

This treatment type removes the damaged layers of skin from the scarring site, allowing for healthy skin to grow over the exposed sites. This treatment can be done in three ways, either by laser, dermabrasion – where a spinning tool with a rough surface removes your damaged skin – or by chemical peel, which removes the top layer of your skin, promoting healthy skin growth.

  • Rolling

A device covered in small needles is rolled over the scar site. The activity stimulates the tissue underneath your scar to grow, which in time will replace the scar. Due to the nature of this treatment, more than one session will normally be recommended.

  • Fillers

This treatment involves your dermatologist injecting collagen or fat into the scarred area, but because your body will absorb the filler over time, subsequent treatments will be necessary.

  • Surgery

Sometimes the scarring is advanced enough that surgery is required to remove the scars. A surgeon will cut the skin away, and repair the area either by stiches or with a skin graft.
