How much does tattoo removal cost?

Find out how much your tattoo removal will cost and how we do it

Tattoos used to be the body art of a subculture, and now they’ve become a commonplace form of self-expression. Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to see people with sleeves of beautiful artwork inked on arms, legs, backs, hands, and torsos.

While we love tattoos as much as the next person, there’s no doubt that tattoos can age. At a certain point, the mantra you had tattooed on your arm at the age of 20 becomes irrelevant when you’re 30 or 40. Thankfully, we’ve developed the technology to get rid of tattoos safely and at an affordable price.

At Victorian Dermal Group, we utilise cutting-edge technologies to provide safe, non-invasive, and highly effective skin treatments. Contact us to book your free skin consultation today.

Do you get scarring after tattoo removal?

We use Q-switched laser tattoo removal techniques. This is the most modern way to remove tattoos with minimal side effects. It’s the only clinically-proven method of removing a tattoo without causing scarring.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

best tattoo removal in Melbourne

Q-switched stands for ‘quality-switched’. These are non-invasive lasers which create a high-intensity pulsed beam light. The laser beam lasts a billionth of a second. Q-Switched lasers can shatter tiny fragments of ink, with minimal-to-no contact with the surrounding skin of the tattoo.

We will pulse the laser over your tattoo, directing the light energy towards the ink. The ink particles absorb this energy and shatter into tiny fragments. In the days following the laser tattoo removal, your immune system will flush out the shattered particles and cause the tattoo to fade.

With each follow-up treatment, more and more ink will shatter and fade until there is nothing left of the original tattoo.

Is laser tattoo removal safe?

Yes! The Q-Switched laser has been developed over the last decade and is the safest tattoo removal laser on the market today.

And, before we even decide on a treatment plan, we will test the laser on your skin to see how it reacts. You can always cancel the treatment if you are worried it’s not right for you.

What are the side effects?

As with other laser systems, your skin may lose slight pigmentation where we’ve treated it. This change is temporary and resolves with time. We recommend avoiding the sun after the treatment, and using sunblock when exposed to UV light.

Does it hurt?

Generally, the feeling of the laser on your skin can vary in sensation, depending on where your tattoo is placed and which ink has been used. Removing black-inked tattoos can be a painful procedure, so we can use local anaesthetic if necessary.

Other coloured tattoos are not as painful, and the procedure is extremely quick. We cool your skin first with ice or cold air, and we can apply topical anesthetic creams as well.

How do I prepare for my tattoo removal?

  • Avoid direct sun exposure for 2-4 weeks before your first laser treatment
  • Eat something before your appointment and make sure you are hydrated
  • Wear loose clothing over the area we will be treating
  • Avoid taking aspirin and ibuprofen before your procedure as they thin the blood and can lead to bruising

What kind of post-treatment care is necessary?

Tattoo removal care

Immediately after we’ve performed the treatment, we’ll apply an ointment and dressing to the affected area. Follow the post-treatment instructions our clinicians give you. You can shower the next day but do not scrub the treated area – in fact, the kind of care required is similar to that of when you got your tattoo.

Book a consultation for a laser tattoo removal

Prior to your laser tattoo removal treatment, we will need to conduct a skin consultation.

We will assess:

  • Your tattoo size, ink colour, and how many treatments will be needed
  • Your medical history
  • Your lifestyle/diet factor – to help provide you with on-going care advice

While we’re looking at the skin around your tattoo, we will also use an ultraviolet woods lamp and our Diagnostic Imagining System to test your skin holistically. We will look at things like:

  • Skin hydration
  • Oily flow
  • Bacteria
  • Skin health and function
