Our renowned doctors

Our experienced cosmetic doctors have decades of training and clinical experience. But what truly sets them apart is their dedication to ensuring their clients are always comfortable, confident and informed.

How do you treat gummy smiles?

We treat gummy smiles using a muscle-relaxing injectable. Our preferred relaxant is highly effective yet extremely gentle on muscle and tissue.

Gummy smiles can be caused by a number of factors, including the size and shape of the gum and the lips. Our treatment is designed to treat those with a short upper lip. Our injections relax the muscles that shape the lips, allowing them to drop and cover more of the exposed gum.

Our clients will attest that our gummy smile injectables are a minimally invasive procedure that results in a more pleasing and confident smile.

How It Works

Why would someone need gummy smile injectables?

Gummy smile injectables can be an effective solution for people who are self-conscious about a disproportionate gum-to-tooth ratio. While some people have naturally recessed gums due to genetics, others may be dealing with a so-called “gummy smile” due to age or uneven development. This condition can lead to an excess display of the gums when smiling, which many patients want to address.

Ultimately, it’s about confidence. Gummy smiles rarely affect a person’s health — our clients simply want to feel and look good. And we are glad to provide a safe way for them to do just that.

Who It’s For

How to prepare for your gummy smile treatment

Preparing your mouth beforehand is essential.

  • For two weeks in the lead-up to the procedure, floss and brush your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste.
  • Avoid sugary, acidic and spicy food or drinks to ensure your gums are not inflamed at your appointment.
  • Use an alcohol-free mouthwash that has antibacterial properties before treatment.
  • Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medication for at least 48 hours before treatment. This will help prevent excess bruising.
Preparation

What happens when you get gummy smile injections

The procedure is quite straightforward, and your appointment will last approximately an hour (including post-monitoring time).

First, we will discuss the plan and the intended results to ensure you and your cosmetic doctor are on the same page.

We will then begin the treatment by wiping and cleansing the skin around the treatment area. At your request, we can apply a numbing cream to your skin. Your doctor will then apply the relaxant injections.

After the procedure, we will ask you to stay for a brief monitoring period to ensure there are adverse reactions. You will then be free to leave.

On the day

Gummy smile treatment aftercare

After receiving gummy smile treatment, patients must follow their aftercare instructions closely. This includes avoiding excessive talking and strenuous activities that cause the mouth and face muscles to move or flex, such as running or jumping, for one to two days following the treatment.

During the healing process, patients should avoid using straws when drinking beverages and refrain from eating hard and chewy foods, such as nuts or raw fruits and vegetables. Lastly, patients should continually apply an ice pack or cold gel pack to the face near the injection site to reduce swelling while keeping the treated area clean by gently washing it with mild soap and cold water.

Aftercare

Injections around the upper lip

Gummy smile injection points are typically across the upper lip, specifically, the orbicularis oris muscle. This muscle helps control expressiveness in the cheeks, lips and chin. The injection site diminishes muscle stress and reduces gum tissue exposure when smiling.

Targeting the orbicularis oris muscle can help treat conditions such as hyperactive muscles and gummy smiles, where excessive gum tissue is visible when a person smiles.

Injections to the sides of the mouth

To help fix asymmetries, we can set gummy smile injection points at the sides and corners of the mouth.

When targeting asymmetries, we must be extremely precise with the amount of relaxant we inject into the lip and just as precise in choosing the injection point. During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss this treatment's challenges so we can design a personalised solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do gummy smile injections hurt?

No. At your appointment, we will apply a numbing cream to the treatment area to ensure there is no pain.

There may be some minor discomfort and soreness around the injection points in the days after your appointment, but these will soon clear up and should not affect you too much.

What causes a gummy smile?

A gummy smile describes a facial expression in which the upper lip rises too high, exposing excessive gum lines. It can be caused by multiple factors, such as an overgrowth of gum tissue, genetic factors, poor oral hygiene, facial anatomy that predisposes one to smile broadly and reveal more of their upper teeth than usual, or orthodontic appliances that can put teeth in positions that make it appear like the individual has a gummy smile. Another cause may be misaligned muscles in the jaw area, known as hyperactive lip elevator muscles.

At what depth are gum treatments injected?

The amount of solution used for these treatments depends upon several factors, but generally, it is best injected at a depth between 1 to 2 mm past the base of the tissue. This depth ensures that the treatment has its desired corrective effect without compromising aesthetic proportions and the patient's natural level of lip movement.

Where to inject for a gummy smile treatment?

A gummy smile treatment involves the injection of certain substances at specific points in the patient’s upper lip. Injections are typically made into three locations: the depressor anguli oris muscle, the levator labii superioris muscle, and the orbicularis oris muscle. In addition, injections can be made along nerve pathways to reduce any discomfort experienced during treatment.
