Here’s how to fix dark under-eye circles so you look bright and fresh everyday

There is nothing worse than waking up after a bad night’s sleep, or a big weekend partying, to find you have huge dark circles under your eyes. And makeup can only go so far to fix the problem. Sometimes, you have to look at the root cause, and consider treating your skin holistically.

Victoria Dermal Group is a leader in the cosmetic skin solutions industry. We offer a range of treatments to combat issues like dark under-eye circles and general skin health. Contact us today to find out which solution works for you.

What do dark circles look like?

Other than the obvious, dark circles or ‘bags’ under your eyes can also include the following symptoms:

  • Puffiness around the eyes
  • Loose and lax under-eye skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Bulging areas of ‘fat’
  • Deep tear troughs
  • Flattened cheeks
  • Enlarged blood vessels
  • Irregular pigmentation

What causes dark circles?

The skin under your eyes is the thinnest skin on your body. This means you can see the blood vessels hiding just beneath the surface more easily. While this can often be caused by genetics, there are other factors which will cause dark circles under your eyes.

Lack of sleep

If you get a bad night’s sleep, or experience extreme tiredness regularly, your face will likely appear dull or pale. This has the converse effect of making those dark circles appear even darker, and more obvious.

Solution

Try drinking herbal teas such as chamomile or Pukka’s night time tea mix an hour before bed. Alternately, use a diffuser and lavender oil like In Essence’s Sleep Well pack.

However, if you often experience a lack of sleep, you’ll know that sometimes there is nothing you can to help drift off at night. In those cases, use chilled cucumbers or eye masks to try to reduce the puffiness of your eyes.

If it’s really bothering you, book an appointment with us. Victorian Dermal Group offers a series of dark circles treatments, such as:

  • Fraxel fractionated laser, a light-based laser which restores tone and volume in your eye area
  • Clear+Brilliant, a non-surgical and non-invasive treatment based on advanced fractional laser technology

Did you know: Fractional lasers are non-invasive devices which deliver a laser beam divided into thousands of microscopic treatment zones which target one fraction of the skin at a time.

Ageing and sun exposure

Sun exposure causes dark circles

There is nothing wrong with ageing – it’s a completely natural process. But if you were lax about using sunscreen in your youth or loved surfing at the beach and getting outdoors, chances are your skin will be suffering as a result.

As you get older, your skin also gets thinner – losing a lot of the fat and collagen needed to maintain elasticity. When this occurs, the dark blood vessels beneath your skin become more visible, causing your under-eye area to darken.

Solution

We offer anti-ageing treatments and solutions to combat sun damage such as:

  • Anti-wrinkle injections
  • Revlite Q-Switch which stimulates collagen production
  • Candela GMX 755NM Pigmentation to remove sunspots and even your skin tone

Stress

When you experience stress, more blood is directed to your main organs, leaving your face looking drained and pale. This will make dark circles look far more noticeable. Stress can also cause the capillaries around the eyes (which are fragile) to beak or leak blood. The blood leaks out under the skin and becomes oxidised, turning your skin a bruised colour.

Solution

Wouldn’t it be great if we could tell you, ‘just don’t get stressed!’? Unfortunately, stress is a fact of life. But you can change the way you react to stress through meditation and mindfulness.

Try the mobile app ‘Calm’ and start with its 21 days of calm meditation sessions. This takes you through, step-by-step, all the different ways you can become more mindful. There are also meditations specifically designed for reducing stress in the workplace, so check them all out and find one which works for you.

If meditation isn’t your thing, try out our dark circle treatments and solutions tailored to treat broken capillaries, such as:

  • V Beam Laser, a coloured laser which specifically targets blood vessels beneath the skin’s surface under your eyes
  • Candela G-MaxYAG laser, a medical-grade, dual-wavelength laser designed to treat the appearance of abnormal veins

Dehydration

When you don’t keep your body hydrated, the skin beneath your eyes can become dull, and your eyes can look sunken. Your eyes are located close to the underlying bone, and when you’re dehydrated, you lack the fluids which cause the blood vessels to swell.

Solution

Well, this is obvious – drink more water. If you work in an office, try filling up two 600 ml bottles of water and having them on your desk. Aim to drink both by the time you leave work for the day. You can also try setting yourself alarms on your phone. Set them for every 2 hours, and remind yourself to drink one glass of water.

If you’re still struggling to stay hydrated, try our laser treatments instead. Our treatments include:

  • Vivace RF microneedling which combines fractional radiofrequency technology with microneedling
  • Ultraformer III, a non-invasive skin lifting and tightening treatment which produces immediate results and lasts anywhere between 12 and 24 months afterwards

Allergies

Allergies causing dark circles

Allergies and eye dryness can also create dark circles. When  you have an allergic reaction, your body produces histamines as a response to the harmful bacteria.

Histamines cause your blood vessels to dilate and become more visible under your skin. Allergies can also make you want to rub your eyes. If you give in to the urge, you can worsen your symptoms, causing inflammation, swelling, and broken blood vessels.

Solution

You can always take antihistamines and try to reduce your exposure to your allergy triggers. But this isn’t always possible. And sensitive skin goes hand in hand with allergies, which can make it hard to find a skin treatment that works for you.

We use machines and base our treatments on the research and products of British skin company, Medik8. The business has pioneered cosmeceutical technologies to make the most effective ingredients suitable for even the most sensitive skin, without decreasing the potency of the products.
