Cosmelan depigmentation treatment is particularly good at treating melasma, which can be quite a stubborn condition to tackle. Also referred to as chloasma, melasma is a skin condition that creates dark patches on the skin, primarily on the face. The causes of melasma vary between individuals. It can be caused by pregnancy, hormone therapy, and stress.
Cosmelan peels excel at removing freckles. This treatment is designed to deactivate the enzymes needed to form melanin, which makes it the perfect treatment for unwanted freckles.

Freckles are simply spots of excess melanin. While they have a genetic component, they’re also caused by sun exposure. Freckles can be found all over the body, especially on the face, shoulders and arms — areas that get a lot of sun.
Lentigos or age spots, are caused by extended sun exposure. They typically appear in people over 40-50 and look quite similar to freckles.

Cosmelan treatment also boosts collagen production within the skin. Collagen is vital for skin hydration and elasticity; its production will smooth out wrinkles and improve your skin’s overall texture.
Each specialising in a range of treatments and technologies, our team of specialists have helped countless Melbourne clients achieve their skincare goals.
Cosmelan is a multi-stage treatment that reduces melanin content within the skin. The treatment aims to lessen or remove skin blemishes caused by conditions such as acne, melasma, or even common freckles. Keeping in mind that it will not cure or eradicate melasma permanently - it is a multi-factorial approach in improving and managing melasma.
Cosmelan treatment takes a two-pronged approach to treating unwanted pigmentation. First, we use Mesoestetic Cosmelan 1 as an exfoliating chemical peel to clear the skin of impurities. Then, we use Mesoestetic Cosmelan 2 to discourage the ongoing production of melanin, providing a long-lasting solution.
A Cosmelan treatment is ideal for people concerned about hyperpigmentation (when the skin produces excessive melanin) creating an uneven skin tone with black, brown or reddish blemishes on the face and body.
All skin tones across all ethnicities are prone to such blemishes. Fortunately, the Cosmelan peel treatment is an effective treatment for all skin types.
Cosmelan is a long-term solution to skin blemishes caused by excess melanin. Once the initial Cosmelan peel is completed at our clinic, you can continue ongoing treatment at home without clinical help if you prefer.
On the day of your Cosmelan treatment, you should arrive at our Melbourne clinic with clean makeup-free skin. We will then apply an ultra-mild cleanser and degreasing solution to ensure a great result.
We typically book appointments in the morning because your Cosmelan treatment day mask remains in place for 8-12 hours. Once the treatment period is complete, you may rinse the Cosmelan mask off with lukewarm water and use the homecare products we will provide.
At the initial consultation, your clinician will give detailed preparation instructions for the day.
After your in-clinic mask, your Cosmelan journey will continue at home with your post-treatment skincare routine. It’s crucial to take good care of your skin in the days following your clinic treatments.
During the first month, you'll apply Cosmelan 2 three times daily. The easy-to-apply cream will help keep any facial blemishes from returning. You must wear strong UV protection whenever you are in the sun.
If you have any questions about your at-home treatment or the healing process, our clinicians are happy to answer them and provide guidance to ensure your skin remains clear and bright.
The first treatment phase is the Cosmelan 1 peel. This is always done in a clinical setting under the guidance of a professional.
When you come in for your treatment, we’ll begin with a gentle facial cleanse. We’ll have to remove dead skin, oils and sweat. Once your face is clean and clear, we’ll apply the Cosmelan 1 peel. The mask will need to remain on your face for up to 12 hours (depending on your skin type). Once the mask is applied, you’re welcome to go home as the treatment takes effect.
Once your time is up, you can remove the mask yourself with a splash of water and a neutral cleanser. This can be done at home.
The second treatment phase is a regimen of Cosmelan 2. The purpose of Cosmelan 2 cream is to reduce the significance of melanin blemishes. It also brightens and evens out skin tone revealing beautiful skin.
You will have to apply this cream to the treatment area 2-3 times per day for the first two weeks following the peel. It’s an intensive regimen but a necessary one. Following the initial two-week period, we recommend you continue using Cosmelan 2 once a day.
We also recommend including Mesoestetic Hydra-Vital Factor K in your regimen. It is a potent skin moisturiser and will help the healing process following the Cosmelan treatment.

You’ll hear plenty from our dermatologists at your consultation. For now, have a read of what our clients have to say about the results we deliver.
Yes, to an extent. Cosmelan peels can help reduce pastules associated with rosacea improving texture/tone and erythema in your skin.
The depigmentation effects of Cosmelan treatment can last for years. With proper ongoing care, they may even be permanent.
Cosmelan 2 can be used for up to six months after your initial treatment.
In the first two weeks after your Cosmelan 1 peel, you will need to use Cosmelan 2 multiple times a day. After that, you may moisturise your face with it once a day. It can easily integrate into any existing skincare routine.
Clients seeking a solution to their pigmentation issues often have to choose between chemical peels, like Cosmelan, or laser treatment. Which one is better?
The truth is that lasers aren’t necessarily better than Cosmelan chemical peels. Several factors go into making a choice — the specifics of your pigmentation issue are chief among them.
At the Victorian Dermal Group, we offer both laser treatments and chemical peels for pigmentation removal. Book a consultation with our team, and we’ll help you decide which treatment is best for your case.
In some cases, cosmelan can result in minor side effects. Immediately following your Cosmelan 1 peel, you may experience:
It’s imperative not to pick and scratch at the treated area; your skin will be incredibly tender, and scratching may lead to scarring.
No — you will not get effective results if you skip the Cosmelan 1 mask.
The Cosmelan 1 peel gives your skin the necessary foundation for Cosmelan 2. The peel removes the outermost layer of skin and dramatically inhibits melanin production.
The difference is that Cosmelan 1 is a mask peel that must be professionally applied, and Cosmelan 2 is a cream that patients can use at home.
